Adam Zampa Player Profile
Adam Zampa has developed into Australia’s leading white-ball spinner, ranking just behind Shane Warne for his exceptional role in limited-overs formats. Known for his energetic and competitive spirit, Zampa emerged in Australia’s limited-overs squads in 2016 following a successful summer with South Australia and the Melbourne Stars. A dynamic leg-spinner, his subtle variations in pace and his ability to deliver a ‘wrong’un’ and straight balls make up for a lack of prodigious turn.
Off the field, Zampa is a colorful character, but his bowling is clinical and focused on control. His remarkable career achievements include taking five wickets at an economy rate of 6.27 in the 2016 T20 World Cup, and a six-wicket haul in the IPL that followed. However, it took Zampa a while to cement his spot in Australia’s ODI and T20I teams.
He finally became a regular member of the Australia squad in 2019, playing in every match on the successful tours of India and the UAE, which secured his spot for the 2019 ODI World Cup. Zampa played a key role in Australia’s T20 World Cup victory in 2021, finishing second on the wickets chart with 13 wickets from seven games at an economy of 5.81. Furthermore, he was Australia’s leading wicket-taker at the 2023 ODI World Cup, despite battling injuries early on, as Australia surged to the title.
While his white-ball success has hindered his first-class opportunities, Zampa remains a valuable asset in limited-overs cricket. He began his career in New South Wales, debuting for the state in the 2012-13 season before moving to South Australia. Zampa later returned to Sydney for the 2020-2021 season in search of more first-class opportunities, but the tight schedule has restricted his chances in this format.
