Lungi Ngidi: Dynamic South African Fast Bowler

Lungi Ngidi is a tall and imposing fast bowler, consistently bowling at speeds exceeding 140 kph. He is as comfortable opening the bowling as he is bowling at the death. Ngidi has been a regular feature in South Africa’s teams, even if he hasn’t always been an automatic choice.

Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Ngidi first came into the spotlight playing for Kwa-Zulu Natal Under-19s at the Khaya Majola week in 2014. His performance caught the eye of Northerns, leading him to move to the University of Pretoria to further develop his skills. He was soon identified as a promising T20 prospect, ranking as the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the provincial Africa Cup T20 tournament.

Breakthrough in Domestic and International Cricket

In the 2015-16 season, Ngidi joined Northerns’ franchise team, Titans, for part of their T20 campaign. He played a vital role in their title win and continued to contribute significantly during their title defence the following season. His strong performances earned him a spot in the South African national team.

International Debut and Early Success

Ngidi made his T20I debut in January 2017 against Sri Lanka and was named Man of the Match after taking 2 for 12. His Test debut came a year later against India, where he played a pivotal role in South Africa’s victory, taking 6 for 39 in the fourth innings of the Centurion Test to put his team 2-0 up in the series. Ngidi’s debut ODI series followed against India, where he claimed eight wickets in three matches, further establishing his reputation.

Recent Performances and Impact

Ngidi continued to impress, taking a six-for in the second ODI of the clean sweep over Australia just before the pandemic. After a year-long break from Test cricket, he returned with seven wickets in two matches against Sri Lanka at home. He later toured Pakistan and the West Indies before facing India again in late 2021. In Centurion, he took eight wickets, though South Africa didn’t secure a win in that series.
