Harpreet Brar: A Versatile Spin Option Rising Through the IPL Ranks

Harpreet Brar has emerged as a valuable all-round option in the IPL, especially for Punjab Kings (PBKS). A left-arm spinner who can also contribute with the bat, Brar first entered the league in 2019 when PBKS, then known as Kings XI Punjab, signed him at his base price of INR 20 lakh. Although his debut season saw him play just two games without a wicket, he would soon make a lasting impression.

Brar’s breakthrough came during the 2021 season. In a standout performance against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he picked up 3 for 19, dismissing Virat Kohli for his maiden IPL wicket. In the same match, he also removed power-hitters Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. That game solidified his place as a bowler capable of delivering under pressure. He played seven matches that season, gaining valuable experience and confidence.

Recognizing his potential, PBKS reacquired Brar in the 2022 auction, this time for a significant INR 3.8 crore. Over the next two seasons, 2023 and 2024, he became a regular feature in the squad. During this period, he picked up 16 wickets across both seasons. His best performance came against Delhi Capitals in 2023, where he returned figures of 3 for 40.

Despite being released ahead of the 2025 auction, PBKS continued to see value in him and bought him back for INR 1.50 crore. This move highlighted the franchise’s continued trust in his abilities, both as a bowler and a utility player.

With every season, Harpreet Brar has shown growth and maturity. His control with the ball, combined with his lower-order batting skills, makes him a reliable asset. As the IPL evolves and teams look for dynamic players, Brar’s adaptability and experience position him well for future opportunities.
