T Natarajan: The Underdog Who Mastered the Art of Death Bowling
T Natarajan, a left-arm pacer from Tamil Nadu, has risen through the ranks to become one of India’s most dependable T20 bowlers. Known for his yorkers and grit, his journey reflects determination, discipline, and a deep understanding of the game.
Early IPL Struggles and Breakthrough
At the IPL 2017 auction, Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) stunned many by signing Natarajan for INR 3 crore—30 times his base price of INR 10 lakh. This made him the highest-paid uncapped Indian player that season. However, he struggled to deliver consistent results and finished the season with just two wickets in six matches. The team released him ahead of the next edition.
In 2018, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) picked Natarajan for INR 40 lakh. Unfortunately, an elbow injury kept him out of action. He had to work hard on his fitness before finally getting an opportunity in IPL 2020.
Emerging as a Death Overs Specialist
Once SRH gave him a proper run, T Natarajan didn’t disappoint. He impressed with his control, especially in the death overs, where his ability to bowl consistent yorkers made him a fan favorite. He bowled fearlessly and often turned the tide in tight games.
In IPL 2024, Natarajan recorded his best season, taking 19 wickets in 14 matches. He consistently delivered under pressure, proving why teams value death bowlers so highly. His precise execution during crunch overs helped SRH remain competitive throughout the season.
Big Payday with Delhi Capitals
Despite his excellent performances, SRH did not retain him for IPL 2025. But at the mega auction, Delhi Capitals stepped up with a massive INR 10.75 crore bid. The deal reflected both his growing stature and the premium teams place on skilled Indian fast bowlers.
T Natarajan continues to inspire cricketers across the country. His ability to overcome setbacks and deliver at the highest level stands as a testament to his character. With Delhi Capitals, he now has a fresh stage to showcase his talent and aim even higher.
