Mohammad Hasnain: Pakistan’s Raw Pace Talent with Untapped Potential

Early Life and Rise to Fame

At first glance, Mohammad Hasnain looked destined to become a top Pakistan fast bowler. Born in Hyderabad, a city with few cricketing exports besides him and Sharjeel Khan, Hasnain stood out. His sleek frame, standing nearly two meters tall, and his front-on bowling action seemed ideal for express pace.

Hasnain burst onto the scene with Quetta Gladiators during the PSL. Alongside Naseem Shah, he quickly gained attention. In 2019, as a lanky 18-year-old, he ended the season among the top ten wicket-takers. That same month, he earned an ODI call-up against Australia. At full throttle, Hasnain regularly clocks over 150kph. He holds the record for the fastest ball in CPL history—155.1 kph.

Success in T20s, Struggles in ODIs

Over time, Hasnain proved more effective in T20s than in ODIs. He struggled in the 50-over format and managed only seven ODIs in the five years after his debut. T20 leagues, however, kept calling. In the 2020 PSL, he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker, showcasing his impact in the shortest format.

Mental Challenges on the Field

Despite his physical gifts, Hasnain’s career faced hurdles beyond injuries. His confidence often dips in high-pressure moments. While Pakistani fast bowlers usually thrive under stress, Hasnain has faltered. He tends to lose his rhythm when targeted. His spells sometimes contain pressure-releasing deliveries due to inconsistent line and control.

Setbacks and a Path to Redemption

Injuries have also slowed him down. A serious ankle issue kept him out for much of 2023. In 2021, his bowling action came under scrutiny during the BBL. After it was declared illegal, he faced a temporary ban. He returned six months later with a remodeled action, although his pace slightly dropped.

These setbacks have pushed Hasnain down the national team’s pecking order. However, he’s still under 25 and has plenty of time to bounce back. With his raw talent, there’s every chance that a brighter, more consistent chapter in his career lies ahead.

Final Thoughts

Mohammad Hasnain remains one of Pakistan’s fastest bowlers. His raw pace and aggression give him unique potential. With improved mental strength and fitness, he could still become a major force in international cricket.
